Video Production in an AI-First World: How Vu Tran is building a comprehensive platform for AI content creation

“Go max dumb. Sometimes as founders we can overthink things and psych ourselves out. But when you go max dumb and just try things, a lot can unlock for you.” - Vu Tran, CEO and Founder of Boba Video
Video has taken over the internet. With the rise of smartphones and social media, video traffic now makes up over 82% of all web traffic, with many people preferring to consume information and entertainment through video rather than image or text.
As AI begins to take a bigger role in content creation, the ability for agencies and content creators to use AI to create compelling video at scale will be critical. When Vu Tran was trying AI video tools for a project he was working on, however, he found that the options available were difficult to use and disconnected from one another. So he decided to create a better solution.
Boba Video: Democratizing storytelling with AI
Today, Vu is building Boba Video, an end-to-end platform for AI video production. By making it possible to produce seamless video, sound, and imagery in a single platform, Boba empowers creators to craft compelling AI video content without juggling multiple tools. The platform is also advancing AI anime video generation, delivering cutting-edge anime-style video production for creators seeking dynamic, high-quality visuals.
Many companies are eager to begin using AI to create video content at scale. And in the past few years, we’ve seen a surge of generative AI solutions introduced to help companies create videos for ads, editorial, and film. But making believable videos with AI is complex, and most tools only solve the tip of the iceberg. In an ad video, for example, products must be able to morph and transform in a realistic way, which requires the creation of a custom image model. Any human spokespeople must have believable voices, which requires perfectly syncing audio to visual avatars.
Because most existing solutions don’t solve all the challenges throughout the AI video creation process, creators must use numerous tools to make a single video. With Boba’s all-in-one platform, however, creators can produce compelling video content without jumping from tool to tool.
Vu’s journey to Boba
Vu didn’t set out to build an AI video platform. He had initially launched Butterflies, a social network for AIs and humans. Vu anticipated that interaction and relationships between humans and AI would continue to increase, but noticed that there was a lack of interesting AI products for consumers outside of generative AI chatbots. With Butterflies, Vu aimed to go beyond simple text exchanges and create a platform that would allow humans to engage with AI in more creative and dynamic ways.
Vu knew that creating believable video content would be critical to bringing AI characters to life on the platform. “As humans, we’ve evolved to see things move. When things move, our eyes are glued to them,” he explains. “When we started introducing video in the product, engagement was night and day different.”
But as he started using the AI video creation tools available, Vu found that no one tool solved all the challenges in the video creation process. He decided to build his own solution to support Butterflies’s needs, and soon found that everyone else wanted it as well.
Vu chose to listen to the market signals and pivoted to build Boba Video, an all-encompassing platform for AI video production.
Though Boba launched only several months ago, leading agencies, Hollywood studios, and educational organizations are already leveraging the platform to create AI video content at scale.
Vu’s advice for fellow founders
Although Vu’s current endeavor, as well as his prior career accomplishments, certainly showcase his aptitude, he emphasizes that sometimes the best thing a founder can do is ignore their logical inclinations. “Sometimes as founders we can overthink things and psych ourselves out. Particularly in this AI world, where so much is changing. When you go ‘max dumb’ and just try things, a lot can unlock for you.”
He adds that when you look at the biggest consumer startups, such as Facebook and Snapchat, the founders were young and naive. But when you want to tackle big, hard problems, “the requisite to succeeding is trying. And sometimes you only try when you’re naive.”
