The rise of voice AI is transforming customer engagement. Especially for small businesses, as it makes it possible for them to match the 24/7 customer service experience of enterprise competitors without having to rely on call centers or scale their team.

But most voice agent solutions require extensive self-configuration, creating a significant barrier to adoption for industries that aren’t tech-native, like brick-and-mortar retailers.

College roommates Vraj Parikh and John Bettinger witnessed the rise of voice AI first-hand as they were studying computer science at Vanderbilt. Recognizing that no one was offering a voice AI solution to solve the unique challenges of traditional retail markets, they set out to build Atlog.

Introducing Atlog: The Power of Voice AI Without The Pains of Configuration

Atlog provides voice agents built specifically for the small businesses often forgotten by Silicon Valley, like the tire retailers, regional banks, and chain stores that power most of the American economy.

These businesses have unique needs. They must manage varying payment plans and navigate complex financing discussions with customers, all while dealing with a constant inflow of customer calls and payment questions. Atlog offers agents built to solve these specialized use cases across collections, customer service, and receptions, enabling retailers to provide 24/7 support without increasing overhead costs.

“Regional businesses have an insane amount of overhead, just to make sure that payment plans are going through and that they're able to handle customer volume,” Vraj explains. “So we're able to help them handle the customer experience in a very professional manner."

While many voice AI companies require customers to configure agents themselves in an agent builder, Atlog works closely with customers to create agents specifically for their needs. The team’s hands-on approach has helped them gain traction as it allows businesses to get up-and-running quickly, regardless of technical expertise. Atlog is also built with TCPA compliance from the ground up, which enables customers to get the benefits of AI automation without the risk.

Hitting the Road—Building Customer Relationships Through In-Person GTM

One of the strategic moves that has helped Atlog win customers, Vraj describes, is the decision to focus on in-person sales instead of cold emailing. “We're a big believer in actually being face-to-face with the customer. Instead of just being like any other SaaS company and just cold emailing and cold calling, we actually show up at customers’ front doors and really try to get to know who they are."

The team’s personable approach has allowed them to build trust with traditional brick-and-mortar businesses, such as furniture stores and tire shops, many of whom conduct business primarily through in-person interactions. Stronger customer relationships have also driven word-of-mouth growth, Vraj explains. “We've been surprised by how well connected individuals within their industry are to each other. We'll have somebody email us or call us and they’ll be a connection from an existing customer who suggested us to them.”

The combination of in-person sales and word-of-mouth growth has driven strong traction—Atlog has doubled revenue every month since launch and is currently preparing to raise their first round.

Vraj and John’s Advice for Fellow Founders

Vraj and John have been able to learn fast by jumping into the deep end. John shares that it’s critical to “stay very focused on one thing rather than trying to hedge bets in different areas,” as it allows you to go deeper in every area of the business and learn by doing.

At the same time, Vraj emphasizes, it’s important to keep iterating when things aren’t working. “Don’t let sunk costs hold you back. Something that we've been pretty good at is cutting ideas that aren’t working. Even if it’s gotten us to the point that we’re at, if it’s not helping us grow, then it doesn't make sense to continue doing it."
