“There's so much anxiety now, especially around AI. We’re the ones that created these machines to mimic our intelligence, but we have so much more than what AI has." - Dada Nabhaniilananda, CEO and founder, The Monk Dude

Artificial intelligence is rapidly transforming industries from agriculture to entertainment. Many people are afraid of being replaced by machines that can think and create, but it’s the qualities that make us truly human, like empathy, creativity, self-awareness, and compassion, that AI cannot replicate.

Having taught meditation and mindfulness practice for over 43 years, yoga monk Dada Nabhaniilananda saw first-hand the degree to which many workers were losing touch with these unique human qualities. So he set out to build The Monk Dude and develop a platform that would help people foster creativity and enrich their lives.

Introducing The Monk Dude: A Guide to Conscious Evolution

The Monk Dude is a membership-based, holistic ecosystem and online community that helps people practice meditation and yoga and explore topics around our evolving relationship with technology.

Unlike other mindfulness apps, The Monk Dude focuses on the deeper impacts of meditation, holistic health through yoga, helping members develop creativity, real self-awareness, empathy, and compassion so that they can become better versions of themselves. With resources on meditation and the science behind it, creative thinking and intuition for innovation, and leadership in the age of AI, Dada aims for the platform to help community members cultivate human qualities that machines cannot replicate.

In addition to an app and online platform, The Monk Dude also provides bridges to in-person experiences, making it possible for members to progress towards meditation and yoga teaching certification, connect with other students, learn about live events in their areas, and even bring live speakers into their company, school, or home.

In the long run, Dada aims for The Monk Dude to evolve into a global brand with teachers across multiple languages and countries, ultimately leading to a universal celebration of human qualities and a more thoughtful relationship with AI.

Dada’s Journey to The Monk Dude

Growing up in New Zealand, Dada always had ambitions of carving his own path. "After going through my phases of wanting to be a wizard and then a rock star,” he explains, “I settled on being a yogi." At 23, Dada left home and traveled to India, where he became a yoga monk.

Following years of training and practicing, a turning point in Dada's journey came when his global yoga association assigned him to a meditation center in Los Altos Hills, Silicon Valley. He began teaching at UC Berkeley, community groups, churches, and yoga centers, but after word of Dada’s expertise spread, more opportunities arose. Soon, he was speaking and consulting at leading tech companies like Google and Apple, and was even invited to speak at TEDx.

As he spoke to bigger audiences, Dada continued to encounter people struggling with anxieties related to modern work and the evolution of technology. Recognizing there was an opportunity for him to help at a broader scale, he teamed up with one of his students to build The Bliss Timer app (you can try it out for free: search Bliss Meditation Courses in the app stores) and set out to adapt his wealth of teachings into digital experiences. Just eight months later, the team has grown to include two additional part-time employees, and version one of The Monk Dude app, including a library of online learning experiences, is ready to launch.

Dada’s Advice for Fellow Founders

Despite having years of experience in content creation and product development, Dada explains that the transition to becoming a founder has been a “big learning curve.”  He encourages fellow founders to prioritize their mental and physical health. The stress is real, he explains, and "the pressure is not going to get less, especially if you succeed."

At the same time, he emphasizes that developing a great team can help reduce the burden. “Make sure you have a really great team. It might be small, but people you really trust and who are really aligned with you. If you're lucky enough to have a really good co-founder where there's really good harmony, that's a huge advantage."
