Inside Romneka Guion's Journey Building Sela: The Care Management App for Family Caregivers

Founder Stories

Family caregivers are responsible for some of the most demanding—and least visible—work in healthcare.  They manage medications, appointments, pain, and more for a loved one, usually while also working a full-time job and raising children. They're often forced to put their own health on the back burner, increasing stressors that lead to caregiver burnout.

If the demands of the role weren’t stressful enough, many caregivers are working with inadequate tooling. Most manage their loved one’s care across paper documentation, notes apps, calendar apps, and task lists that don’t talk to each other.

After spending more than 15 years as a caregiver for her mother while also working as a project manager in corporate tech, Romneka Guion experienced these challenges first-hand. So she set out to build Sela, a new approach to caregiver management.

Introducing Sela: Caregiving, Organized

Sela is a caregiving management app that enables caregivers to unify care management in a single, digital system.

Caregiving apps do exist, but most only cover part of the care picture. One app might track blood glucose and blood pressure, but it doesn’t collect diet and nutritional information, for example. Meanwhile, many of the devices supplied by Medicare and Medicaid aren’t built to connect with modern device-connected apps.

Sela makes it possible to track all aspects of the caregiving process in a single platform, including medication management with refill urgency alerts and allergy tracking, vitals history with trend indicators, appointments with audio recording and transcripts, a USDA database integration for nutrition, notetaking, and more. The platform also offers pain episode tracking features not available in other caregiving apps, and AI reporting to surface insights and trends that can be useful to doctors and specialists.

Romneka is also expanding the offering by adding Reconnect, a wellness directory that points caregivers to local and virtual support, walking groups and peer- or counselor-led virtual support groups as examples. As Romneka explains, “the person doing the supporting needs support too.”

Romneka’s Journey to Sela

Before building Sela, Romneka spent 15 years as a consultant and project manager in infrastructure technology. Alongside her demanding career, however, Romneka also spent mornings, nights, and weekends caring for her mother, managing medications, meals, appointments, and her mother’s condition from day to day.

Not long into her journey as a caregiver, Romneka started looking for a unified caregiver app. When she couldn’t find one, she assumed that someone would build it. But year after year, the realization that nobody had, at least not in the way she envisioned, was surprising.

As AI became more present in her corporate career, Romneka set out to train herself on AI tools to stay current. When she began experimenting, she suddenly realized that the platform she'd spent over a decade looking for was now something she could actually make herself.

She built the app in March 2026, and by April had launched in private beta. Now in open beta, Sela has consistently driven steady weekly user growth and is aiming for over one hundred new users by the end of the year.

Romneka is currently raising Sela’s pre-seed round and is actively looking for a CTO-level technical co-founder to join the team.

Romneka’s Advice for Fellow Founders

Having spent 15 years building a distinguished career while also caring for her mother, Romneka knows what it means to juggle multiple responsibilities and the toll it can have. But as a founder, she learned that it’s important to create space for your mission. Once she made the space in her life, opportunities kept opening: room for supporting users, for investors, and for developing a community of other founders.

"If you are courageous enough to make space, then the universe will present the opportunities and the people you need to come into that space," she says.
